The focus for this practice session will be:
Protectors and Exiles
This exercise helps you deepen your understanding of protectors by exploring the exile - the vulnerable part - they work hard to protect. Protectors often react automatically to shield exiles from pain, fear, or shame. Understanding their deeper motivations can be profoundly healing.
You’ll start with a recent situation where you felt a mild emotion you didn’t want to feel. Then you’ll identify what you did to manage that emotion - your protector’s strategy. That strategy becomes your focus for exploration.
With curiosity and care, you’ll ask the protector what it’s trying to accomplish, what it’s afraid will happen if it doesn’t act, and what might happen then. As the answers unfold, you may touch on exile energy. If that becomes overwhelming, pause and regulate your system before continuing.
By the end, you’ll reflect on what you now understand and appreciate about your protector’s intentions, fears, and inner dilemma - strengthening trust and Self-leadership.
Exciting Update for Our Parts Work Practice Community
Over the past five years, the exercises we’ve used in our Parts Work Practice sessions have been shared in PDF form so we could gather feedback from all of you. Thanks to your participation, insights, and reflections, the PartsWork Guidebook has now been submitted to the publisher and is entering its final editing stages!
As we move toward publication, the publisher has asked that we no longer distribute the exercises as PDFs. From now on, the exercises will still be fully guided and facilitated during our practice sessions, but they will no longer be shared in downloadable form.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who has attended sessions, offered feedback, and helped shape this Guidebook. Your contributions over the past five years have made this possible.
You’ll still have the opportunity to experience these exercises in every practice session, and once the Guidebook is published, it will be available for purchase so you can have a complete, beautifully edited version to reference anytime.
Thank you for being part of this journey with us—we couldn’t have done it without you!
Important Details:
The group meets from 5:00 to 6:15 PM Pacific on Wednesdays via Zoom Video Conferencing.
The main room will be opened at 2 minutes before the hour so we can start the meditation on the hour.
The meeting will be locked by 5:10 PM (Pacific) so plan to join before that time. Those who lose internet connection after this time may not be able to rejoin. So be sure you have a strong internet connection so we don’t lose you.
Parts Work Practice sessions are never recorded.
No AI bots or AI recording please. Keep this space safe and confidential.
We introduce people to a self-healing journey using The Internal Family Systems model (IFS).
This is not a therapy group, nor is it a 12-Step group. Parts Work Practice is not sponsored or endorsed by the IFS Institute and is not intended to replace IFS training. In this no-cost practice group, we discuss and facilitate the practice of exercises we have created to help you practice connecting with and getting to know your parts.
What you can expect
We meet for 75 minutes via Zoom video conferencing.
One of the Co-leaders or Practice Assistants will guide us in a Parts Check-in meditation.
After a few announcements, IFS-trained volunteers will facilitate interactive exercises in breakout rooms. During the last 15 minutes we will gather again in the main room so you can share insights and ask questions.
Here is the Zoom invitation for our meeting.
